Teen Confidence or Cover-up? How do I begin developing my inner abilities?
Supporting teens to move from noisy confidence to self-reflection, self-awareness, and genuine self-worth.
In a world full of distractions, it is common for teens not to trust themselves or the people around them. Distrust shows up as a tight discomfort in the body, and most teens react to it without ever asking, why? Instead, they put on a strong face and an attitude because showing weakness can feel unacceptable, especially when they feel backed into a corner. At times, this can turn into defensiveness or a false sense of superiority that creates fear in others while briefly making them feel more secure in themselves.
Why teens struggle with self-worth
Many teens struggle with self-worth because they focus outward, seeking acceptance and changing themselves to meet others’ expectations; over time this neglect of their true feelings sends the message to the heart that it is not important, eroding identity and leaving them wondering if anything matters. Past hurts train the mind to expect rejection, so it constantly judges experiences and invents protections—sometimes creating the false hope that acting a certain way will make everyone accept them. Repeated thoughts become beliefs that lodge in the body as emotions; when discomfort or a trigger appears, it often signals an old belief that no longer holds true but still affects their feelings and behavior—and noticing that link is the first step toward releasing it.
How to gain respect from a disrespectful teen.
Words of wisdom:
Respect grows where attention and kindness are given.
What we look for uncovers what we will find.
Respect grows where attention and kindness are given. What we look for uncovers what we will find. Remember—we are like mirrors: when someone behaves disrespectfully, it often comes from feeling disrespected themselves. Instead of reacting with the same emotion being projected at you, observe the situation with calm curiosity. Offer your steady, loving presence without fear or expectation. That presence can melt resistance and open a door to feeling seen and respected.
Building self-esteem through self-awareness
Checking in with oneself is an act of self-love. Taking notice of how our thoughts and surroundings shape our mood is essential. When we push our own needs aside for others, the heart feels neglected, and we slowly lose an essential part of who we are. When parents repeatedly put duties before presence, children learn to do the same, and both generations carry a quiet wound: feeling unseen, unappreciated, and unworthy of love. Love is felt most clearly through presence; True connection grows from vulnerability. When we communicate openly about our feelings, and combine sharing each other’s strengths and weakness it helps eachother to see each other’s strengths and weakness and discuss ways to over come them by trusting and guiding each other, strengthening parent–child bond through honor and trust and teaches both parent and child how to respect and care for themselves and others, building a great foundation for the future.
